About the work
Speaking without words…
So much can be communicated without a narrative or the drawing out of figurative forms. Just like a look or a touch, a breath or a smile can tell us so much more in an instant, by instinct, than stories weaved from words.
Abstract art is a way of connecting authentically with ourselves, our environment and others in the experience of being human. There are no expectations, no judgements and no limitations; just a few moments of ‘aliveness’, prompted by a piece of visual art.
Emily Jane Traynor has been a professional creative in different capacities for all of her ‘grown-up’ life. Living in Somerset, UK, with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art from the University of Plymouth, Traynor’s work vibrates with the influence of her deep connection with the ancient and her rediscovered Christian faith.
Studies into the prehistoric origins of mark-making inform the layers of watercolour, acrylic and (often handmade) ink. Traynor’s practice is a meditative exploration of the abstract genre that investigates the interaction between spirituality, community and nature.
Traynor expresses non-figurative organic forms in her contemplation of life and the human search for the sacred. Many works are inspired by scripture and the great women and men of the Bible. Promise Keeper, for example, meditates on Sarah, mother of nations, and Yocheved dives into the indomitable strength of a midwife and mother protecting infants from slaughter; particularly poignant in today’s world.
The work has grown over the last decade and a half into a fluid, organic communication that softly draws together the layers of our existence, in a dynamic yet ethereal frame.
